In the spring of 2018, my wife and I purchased our first home in Merida’s Centro. Over the next few years, we started discussing additions that we wanted to make in the home. We reached out to the listing agent to get some recommendations from reputable contractors in the area that he might suggest.

Gareth Doel was at the top of the list, so we gave Gareth a call. Over the next few weeks, Gareth listened to our wants and assured us that his team of craftsmen could handle the tasks.

We were so impressed with their work that over the past 5 years, we’ve exclusively used Gareth and his company to remodel 3 more homes in Centro for us.

We’ve noticed that a lot of builders promise a lot but when it comes to the final product – the quality in the finishes isn’t there. With Gareth and Prop Total the finishing touches are always right on and that’s something that they take pride in.

My wife and I trust Gareth and his team 100 percent and know that the job will always be done correctly.

We approached Gareth from PROP TOTAL when our colonial restoration ended up being a disaster. We couldn’t decide whether to walk away from the mess or if it could be salvaged, and asked Gareth if he could consider the task of salvaging the project.

For example, the plumbing from three bathrooms led nowhere, and there was no plumbing to the pool. There was a water feature that didn’t function and had to be completely removed. Floors had to be re-tiled. Much of the electrical work had to be corrected. Upgrades were required to the woodwork and stonework as well as the cupboard doors.

Gareth agreed to take on this difficult project. His dedication to the project, his professionalism, the quality of his work, and the expertise of his workers was beyond our expectations. The cost estimates and time frame were always as quoted.

Gareth and his staff at Proptotal have done amazing work on the many maintenance & construction jobs they’ve done for me over the years. They have always been very professional and answered all my questions.

With the extreme temperatures in Merida, something is always breaking down, but Gareth had no problem finding a way to fix the issues and make everything work.

As a single female purchaser of a derelict property in the Centro section of Merida, I was quite intimidated about starting the project that I took on in 2019. My plan was to restore as much of the main part of the house that was salvageable and to substantially add to the property with new construction.

Adding to my fear and uncertainty was the fact that I would not be able to be in Merida during construction; I could only spare the time to fly back and forth from the US every few months. Nor do I speak Spanish. The whole process I found myself facing was absolutely terrifying.

Gareth was very highly recommended by my realtor and working with him has become the best real estate decision I’ve ever made.

Gareth’s level of expertise, attention to detail, artistic intuition, integrity and willingness to communicate weekly (often daily) with out-of-town clients via text and email, coupled with the quality of work by his craftsmen, makes him one of the top builders in Merida.

It’s now 2024 and, because Covid took a toll on my finances for a couple of years, we are just now almost at the finish line. I’m so very lucky that Gareth and his team stuck by me and worked on the project at the pace that I could afford. I know for a fact that other builders of his caliber wouldn’t be as patient.

I now have a beautiful and unique home that I dreamed up in my head and Gareth and his team turned into a reality far beyond those initial dreams.

A big shout out to PROP TOTAL. AII I can say is: thank god for Gareth and his guys. They have come to my rescue many many times. They are reliable, trustworthy, and honest, and they REALLY REALLY know what they are doing. From small jobs to big jobs, and everything in between. I’ve had plumbing and electrical emergencies and Gareth’s crew were able to get the job done properly and in a timely manner. I highly recommend them for home maintenance, repairs and renovations.

Our first encounter with Gareth was through our real estate agent in Merida, when we needed some repairs to our casa. He came highly recommended for his work ethic and attention to detail. We were very satisfied with the work and the quoted cost. Communication was not a problem as Gareth speaks both English and Spanish and just to clarify, Doel is definitely not Spanish or Mayan!

Upon our arrival to Merida, he was an obvious choice to quote on renovating our casa. We had many ideas and changes we wanted and a very outstanding strong point is Gareth listens to what you want. His 10 years experience and knowledge of the Yucatan was most helpful in designing, building and completing the work. He has many creative and imaginative ideas which makes collaborating fun and exciting! Perfection is always his goal and he will not tolerate sub-standard work!

His crews are respectful and polite and are Mayan masters of concrete and stone. They keep the work site organized and clean up is done at the end of every work day. We occupied our casa during renovations and every effort was made to ensure a safe environment for us and our 2 dogs. It was an adventure!

Money! Ah yes, the budget! Our work was always quoted and costs were sent to us in a timely manner. Keep in mind, changes to plans will drive up costs and even these additions were quoted before work would proceed. Response to problems were resolved quickly to everyone’s satisfaction.
